Wax Sealing as a Hobby: Inspiration to Get Started ✨
What was once a formal way to seal letters has grown into one of the most enjoyable creative hobbies around today. It combines the calm of a repetitive craft with a result you can see and hold straight away. And the best part is that you need very little to get started.
Why wax sealing has become so popular
It combines the soothing repetition of a craft with a beautiful, instantly visible result. Every seal turns out just a little different, which makes it all the more satisfying to make and to collect. On top of that, it's accessible: you don't need expensive equipment, and you'll pick up the basic technique within a few tries. I still see new people light up every time they hold their first successful seal.
A short history, for anyone curious
Wax seals were used for centuries to seal official documents and letters, proving the contents hadn't been seen before. That practical function has largely disappeared, but the aesthetic has stayed, and become even more popular. Where a seal once conveyed status and authority, it now stands mostly for personal attention and craftsmanship.
Simple projects for beginners
- Seal a journal or notebook for a personal touch.
- Make loose seals in advance on a wax seal mat, ready to stick on later.
- Experiment with colour combinations to find your own signature shade.
- Seal a gift tag instead of using the standard sticker or ribbon.
- Make a set of loose seals as decoration for a photo album or scrapbook page.
Never made a wax seal before? No worries, I explain all the basic steps calmly in my beginner's guide to the Wax Seal Starter Kit.
Using wax seals beyond envelopes
Think of sealing a gift wrap, adding a seal to a photo album, or even decorating homemade candles by pressing the motif into the warm wax. Wax stamps also give a surprisingly lovely effect on cards or small wooden objects. Looking for more gift-focused ideas? I share a few in my article on gift ideas with a wax seal kit.
Wax sealing as a social or shared hobby
Plenty of hobbyists discover that wax sealing is also great fun to do together, for example while preparing wedding invitations with friends, or as a creative evening in. It's easy enough that anyone can join in, even without any experience.
Building your own collection
Many hobbyists start with one stamp and gradually expand. A new motif each season, an extra wax colour, perhaps a personalised stamp with your own initials. Wondering which style to go for next? I'll help you decide in my article on which wax seal stamp suits your style. Browse the full range in my Wax Seal Stamps collection and the colours in my Sealing Wax collection.
Combining wax sealing with other hobbies
One of my favourite things about this hobby is how well it pairs with things you're probably already doing. Enjoy calligraphy? A hand-lettered envelope with a matching wax seal is a beautiful combination. Into bullet journaling or scrapbooking? A small seal between your pages adds just that bit of extra atmosphere. Even when wrapping gifts or making your own candles, you can apply the technique with ease.
Materials to experiment with
Once you've got the basics down, that's when it really gets fun to experiment. Think of foil flakes for a metallic accent within your seal, dried flowers pressed into the wax, or different wax seal shapers to create outlines other than the classic circle. Each of these additions gives a completely different result using the same basic technique.
Frequently asked questions about wax sealing as a hobby
How much time does it take to pick up this hobby?
Surprisingly little. You'll learn the basic technique within a few practice seals, and making a batch usually takes no more than ten to fifteen minutes.
Is it an expensive hobby to start?
No, a starter kit is enough to get going, and the parts last a long time. Any expansions happen at your own pace and budget.
Can I do this together with children?
With supervision from an adult, since it involves working with warm wax, this makes a fun shared activity.
